What is Startup India registration?

Startup India registration, formally DPIIT recognition, is government recognition for eligible innovative businesses under the Startup India initiative. A private limited company, LLP or registered partnership firm can apply on the Startup India portal if it meets the notified age, turnover and innovation criteria. Everything you need to know about Startup India consultancy

What Startup India consultancy means

Startup India consultancy is expert help to get your business recognised under the Startup India initiative of the Government of India and to use the benefits that follow. Recognition is given by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). A consultant checks if you qualify, prepares the application and the supporting papers, files it on the official portal, and guides you on the schemes you can apply for next.

BizSetups works online. We review your business, tell you honestly if you are eligible, and then handle the filings.

Startup India recognition and who can apply

DPIIT recognition is open to entities that meet the criteria notified by the government. At a high level, the entity must be a private limited company, a registered partnership firm or an LLP. It must be within the age limit from the date of incorporation or registration, and its turnover must stay within the limit notified. It must be working towards innovation, development or improvement of products, processes or services, or have a scalable business model with high potential for employment or wealth creation. A business formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business does not qualify.

A sole proprietorship is not eligible, so a proprietor must first move to a company or LLP. The age and turnover limits are set by notification and can change. A startup should be no more than 10 years old. We confirm the current limits on the day we file. For the entity, see Private Limited Company registration and LLP setup.

Benefits of Startup India registration

Recognition opens the door to several benefits. Some come with recognition itself, and others need a separate application and approval.

  • DPIIT certificate: an official proof of recognition that you can show to banks, investors and buyers.
  • Income tax benefit: eligible startups can apply for a deduction on profits under section 80-IAC of the Income-tax Act. This needs a separate approval from the Inter-Ministerial Board, and it applies for a set number of years chosen within the allowed block.
  • Self-certification: recognised startups can self-certify compliance with selected labour and environment laws, subject to the scheme rules.
  • IPR support: a rebate on patent and trademark filing fees, as set out in the scheme.
  • Funding access: eligibility to apply for government programmes such as the Fund of Funds for Startups and seed funding schemes, subject to their own terms.
  • Public procurement: relaxed prior experience and turnover norms in some government tenders.

Not every benefit is automatic. Each has its own conditions, and we explain which apply to your case.

Startup India registration process

The process runs on the official Startup India portal. We prepare the content and you review it before submission.

  1. Incorporate: set up the company, LLP or partnership firm if you do not already have one.
  2. Register on the portal: create the startup profile with your entity details.
  3. Apply for recognition: submit the form with a clear description of your innovation or scalable model, along with the documents.
  4. Review: DPIIT examines the application and may ask for more details.
  5. Get the certificate: on approval you receive the DPIIT recognition certificate.
  6. Apply for benefits: file for tax exemption, IPR rebate, funding or other schemes you want.

Documents for Startup India consultancy filings

For recognition you generally need the Certificate of Incorporation or registration, the PAN of the entity, the MOA and AOA or the LLP agreement, details and identity proofs of the directors or partners, a short description of the innovation or the pitch deck, and proof of a website or social media presence. For a tax exemption application, you also need financial statements and income tax return details. The portal may also ask for other papers, and we confirm the list with you at the start.

Section 80-IAC tax exemption explained

Section 80-IAC allows eligible startups a deduction of profits for a set number of consecutive years within a block set by the law. It is not given by DPIIT recognition alone. A startup must apply to the Inter-Ministerial Board and get its certificate, and it must meet the conditions in the section, including the incorporation window. The benefit helps only when the company earns profits, so many young startups gain little in the early years. We tell you plainly whether it is worth applying for your stage.

After recognition: what to do next

Recognition is a starting point. Keep your books clean and your filings on time, because investors and the Board will look at them. Use bookkeeping and accounting to keep records tidy, annual MCA compliance for company filings, and trademark filing to protect your brand name. You may also benefit from business plan preparation before you meet investors, and from GeM portal registration if you want to sell to government buyers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions on Startup India consultancy and registration

Short answers to the questions founders ask most.

Who is eligible for Startup India registration?

A private limited company, LLP or registered partnership firm can apply if it meets the notified age and turnover limits and works on innovation or a scalable model. The age limit is up to 10 years. The criteria are set by the government and can change, so we confirm them before filing.

Can a sole proprietorship get DPIIT recognition?

No. A sole proprietorship is not eligible. Only a private limited company, an LLP or a registered partnership firm can apply. A proprietor who wants recognition should first set up a company or LLP, and then apply in the name of that entity.

How long does DPIIT recognition take?

Recognition typically takes about 10 to 15 working days. The real time depends on DPIIT review, on the quality of your documents and on whether the department raises queries. A clear innovation note and complete papers reduce the chance of delay.

Does Startup India recognition give a tax exemption automatically?

No. Recognition does not give a tax benefit by itself. To claim the section 80-IAC deduction, a startup must apply separately and get approval from the Inter-Ministerial Board, and it must meet the conditions in the section. The benefit also helps only when the company has profits.

What is section 80-IAC?

Section 80-IAC of the Income-tax Act allows eligible startups a deduction on profits for a set number of years within a block fixed by the law. The startup must hold the Board certificate and meet the incorporation and other conditions. Please confirm the current terms with a tax advisor before you plan around it.

What documents are needed for Startup India registration?

You need the Certificate of Incorporation or registration, the entity PAN, the MOA and AOA or the LLP agreement, director or partner details, an innovation note or pitch deck, and proof of a website or social media page. A tax exemption application needs financial statements and return details.

What is the innovation criterion?

The business must work towards innovation, development or improvement of products, processes or services, or have a scalable model with high potential to create jobs or wealth. You must explain this in plain terms in the application. A vague or purely trading description is the most common reason for queries or rejection.

Can a recognised startup get government funding?

A recognised startup can apply for government programmes such as the Fund of Funds for Startups and seed funding schemes. Recognition does not guarantee a grant. Each scheme has its own eligibility, process and selection. We help you understand the options and prepare the applications.

What is self-certification under Startup India?

Self-certification lets a recognised startup declare compliance with certain labour and environment laws for a set period instead of facing routine inspections, subject to the scheme rules. It does not cover every law. Your startup still has to follow the rules. We explain which laws are covered for your business.

Is there an IPR rebate for startups?

Yes, recognised startups get a rebate on fees to file patents and trademarks as set out in the scheme. The rate can differ between patents and trademarks, so check the current figure before you file. Our team can combine the recognition with your trademark filing.

How much does Startup India consultancy cost?

The cost depends on your business structure, the documents and the support you need. BizSetups gives a clear quote after a short call, covering our fee, and tells you in advance about any government cost. Call +91 92788 13303 to get a quote for your startup.

What should I do after getting the DPIIT certificate?

Keep your company filings and books up to date, apply for the schemes that suit your stage, and protect your brand. Many founders apply for an IPR rebate, funding support or the section 80-IAC approval. We can handle annual compliance, accounts and the scheme filings for you.
